Caribfest Launch 2014
Although it got off to a late start, the 2014 Caribfest Launch was a smashing one. DJ Blick entertained the growing crowd with a variety of Caribbean hits and had some persons rocking to the rhythmic beats that our music is well-known for. This year, our host and hostess were Japheth Pierre and Tarina Simon and they did a great job.
The show opened with an engaging and high-energy performance by the Mansion Bulls who were all over the room and in people’s faces in the audience. The high charge in the room did not fall because next came the IV Dancers who captivated the crowd, who were on the edges of the seat, with their fluid movements and choreography.
After this, models graced the stage in exquisite swim suits designed by owner of C-Fashio n, Colette Lewis. Some of the pieces modeled received thunderous applause from the audience. Right after the models, the promo videos for Caribfest 2014 and Ms. Caribfest were played after which the five contestants for Ms. Caribfest, accompanied by reigning queen Suprena Poleon, made their first public appearance. This generated a significant buzz of conversation all across the room. We then had a soca show sampler with songs from two of this year’s contenders, Okan La Fleur and Kyle Gordon. Their pieces whetted our appetite for what is in store for next Monday night’s Soca Show.To end the Launch on a high note, some of the Bands who will be on the road Parade Day presented their costumes. Jab Jab, Blue Devils, the Iron Band, Flagwavers and Pretty Mas showcased what they will be displaying next Friday on the MSU campus.
Absent were Depruh Band, the Alumni Band and the Greeks. Closing remarks were given by Caribfest chairs Rhea Durand and Clynt George. This year’s Launch has truly set the tone for the Caribfest events. From the decorations to the representation of each show or event in the line-up, the spirit of Caribfest and anticipation for the festivities are heavy in the air. A great job was done by the organizers, Fatisha Imo and Ashaunta Williams, and they could not have done it without the assistance of the decorations team led by Colette, the set-up and break-down team led by Jameel Roberts, the food committee led by Hernica Pinard-Hypolite, and DJ Blick on the sound system. Caribfest this year is really large!
